What Should I Expect When I Visit?

Our message, the music, the friendly people, and atmosphere are integral to our worship of God in using ancient liturgies of the Church. The ancient liturgies, the rich symbolism, the language, and even our standing, sitting, and kneeling all give shape to the mystery of God present with us. We know your first time at church, any church, will bring up questions, and we encourage your questions. The RE Church worships God. Worship isn't for our entertainment, but is meant to fulfill Jesus' command to "do this in remembrance of me." Do not expect to understand everything as there are layers of symbolism not only in the meaning of the words, but also in the actions of each person. Each person participates. Just place yourself before God and ask Him into your life in that present moment.

What should I wear?

"I wear what's comfortable for me."  Ben, San Diego

We're concerned about people, their struggles, their relationships. We want each person to hear the message, to share in the worship, and to have fellowship with others as we draw closer to God. It isn't about what you wear or what your kids are wearing. Just getting to church says, "I care enough to make it here."

The San Diego Reader reported that we dressed "fairly casual, some button-down shirts, some shorts and T-shirts." --Matthew Lickona, San Diego Reader

What about kids in church?

"We got to worship God together!" --Alyse, Carlsbad

We encourage parents to bring their children into our worship. One visitor stated, "This is the most important place for my child to be: worshiping God surrounded by God's family." All of us have been there when our kids are "being kids." We rejoice in being together in God's presence. Getting up, walking babies, and taking a quick break are all part of our being a family. We hope you'll bring your child with you to receive a blessing from the priest near the close of the service.

The 5 Biblical Purposes

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." [Matthew 22.37-40, Summary of the Law] "Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." [Matthew 28.17]
